Communtiy Projects

Community Project #1 took place at Davis Community Center in Memphis, TN.  I spent a semester of Wednesday afternoons working with 4-6 graders in an after-school art program.  My project was built around environmental degradation and recycling.  Our area had just endured a serious storm that downed hundreds of trees.  I brought all the downed wood I could haul, donated the paint, and foraged for all the additional scrap wood from a lumber yard.  The kids brought loads of things they found to add to their sculptures.  Our idea was to create something beautiful from something that was an eyesore and a hindrance.  They kids had a great time learning to use tools and building art rather than simply drawing or painting (it was an experience they were far less familiar with).

Community Project #2 was held at Martha's Manor a daycare for women with mental impairments.  This experience was so touching.  The ladies were so varied in their abilities.  My idea was to have them make books.  They were excited, but there was a lot of doubt as to whether this could be accomplished or not.  It was a lot of work on my part to prepare all of the pieces and break everything down into simple easy to follow steps, but it was very worth it in the end.  Every lady ended up with their own beautifully covered, handmade journal that they were very proud of.  Just check out their happy faces, it melts my heart.
